About the Kingwood, Texas Area

Kingwood is a beautiful master-planned community located in Harris County. It is the largest master-planned community in the county, encompassing 14,000 acres of land. Kingwood calls itself "The Livable Forest" because of the beauty of the natural environment and its abundant trees. Tall pines, magnolias and many varieties of shade trees grace Kingwood's neighborhoods. The wildlife in Kingwood lives undisturbed in the many hundreds of acres of nature preserves. Kingwood development began in 1969 and as of 2005, its population was approximately 65,000 people. Kingwood has all the advantages of city living yet enjoys a small-town, friendly environment. This is a wonderful family-oriented community and an ideal place to live.

Education

Kingwood children attend the Humble Independent School Districts schools. Humble ISD schools serving Kingwood include 7 elementary schools, 1 middle school and currently, 1 high school. Kingwood Park High School will also serve Kingwood high-schoolers in the future.

Fourteen of Humble ISD's schools have earned the Texas Education Agency's highest rating of Exemplary, while seven campuses are rated Recognized, and seven campuses are rated Acceptable. The district has no low performing schools. More than 90 percent of Humble ISD's students continue their education after graduation, and Humble ISD's average SAT and ACT scores exceed state and national averages.

Kingwood is also home to Kingwood Community College that has an enrollment of approximately 6,000 students.

Kingwood Villages

Kingwood is unique in that it has 21 communities within it; there is certainly a neighborhood to appeal to every life style including families, businesspersons and retirees. Housing architecture and price varies from neighborhood to neighborhood and each community has its own village association.

Location

Kingwood is located in Harris County, in the southeastern portion of Texas. It is approximately 58 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and approximately 77 miles east to the Louisiana border. Kingwood is in the metropolitan area of Houston located about 23 miles north of Downtown Houston, just off of U.S. 59. Kingwood is conveniently located near Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Kingwood is conveniently located 58 miles from Galveston and the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico that is perfect for a day trip. Kingwood is 152 miles from Austin, Texas. Dallas is 210 miles away and San Antonio is 201 miles from Kingwood.

Geography/Terrain

Kingwood boasts a beautiful natural environment with hundreds of acres of nature preserves and green belt open space. Towering pines and a beautiful variety of flowering trees dot the landscape.

Kingwood and the Houston area's climate is classified as being humid subtropical and is located in the gulf coastal. Its vegetation is classified as temperate grassland. Much of Houston and the surrounding area was built on forested land, marshes, swamp, or prairies. Houston is sometimes called the "bayou city".

Jobs

Kingwood has its own thriving business centers, with retail shops and many excellent restaurants. Kingwood's Town Center offers employment opportunities as well as convenience for Kingwood residents. In addition, Kingwood is only three miles North of Deerbrook Mall and Humble, Texas.

The top employers in the Kingwood/Humble area include Humble Independent School District, Northeast Medical Center Hospital, Kingwood Medical Center, Administaff, Inc., Lawler Foods, Inc., Pam Lyschnet State Jail, Panalpina, Kingwood College, Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Walmart, Inc.

All of the job opportunities of Houston are only a ½ hour commute time from Kingwood. Almost 10% of Kingwood residents who work in Houston car pool. Many use the Park-and-Ride lots or take the bus to get to work.

Houston is famous for international business and home to many Fortune 500 companies. It is also world renowned for its oil and aeronautics industries. NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and Mission Control Center is located in Houston. The Port of Houston is the sixth largest port in the world and one of the busiest ports in the United States. In addition, Houston is renowned for medical research. The Texas Medical Center is one of the world's most important research and health care institutions.

Kingwood residents are well educated as over 53% have a college degree and over 26% have some college education. The top employment sectors of Kingwood residents are Management at 17%, Sales and Sales Related at 14%, Office & Administrative at 14%, and Education at almost 9%.

Housing

Kingwood residents live a high quality of life and over 80% of the population lives in their own home. Approximately 15% live in rental units (apartments, condos or houses). Housing prices in Kingwood are comparable to Houston, and are a great bargain as compared to many other areas of the country. Homes range from as low as $80,000 for a small starter home to as much as $1 million for a luxury estate. Kingwood is the kind of area that investors are interested in - highly desirable, beautiful, safe and reasonably priced.

Kingwood is also home to 5 retirement and assisted-living communities.

Recreation

Kingwood has wonderful nature trails and lots of greenbelt open space for jogging, walking or bicycling. The trails meander through the neighborhoods. These areas are nice for enjoying the woods, lakes and wildlife. The trails can also be an alternate route to neighborhood schools, parks and shopping.

Most villages in Kingwood have their own swimming pools and parks. The swim team competes with other local communities. In addition, several parks in Kingwood provide outdoor activities including boating, fishing, ball fields, and tennis courts.

Kingwood has two private challenging golf clubs for the use residents and their guests --- Deerwood Club and the Kingwood Country Club.

There are many other excellent private golf courses in the area including Walden on Lake Houston, Redstone Golf Club and Atascocita Country Club. Public courses include Cypresswood Golf Club, Humble Oil Patch Golf Center, Kingwood Cove Golf Club, Kingwood Golf Advantage School, Tour 18 Golf Course, Oakhurst Golf Club, and the World Houston Golf Course H&H Ranch.

Other great parks in the area include Lake Houston State Park in New Caney and Jesse H. Jones Nature Park in Humble.

Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Center offers one of the state's finest facilities for nature education. Natural beauty and history are combined in this 225-acre park located along the banks of Spring Creek. The park is home to authentic reproductions of an 1830s homestead, called Redbud Hill Homestead, and an Akokisa Indian Village.

Special Attractions/Events

The arts are alive in Kingwood! Kingwood Dance Theater, Kingwood Chorale, Kingwood Nathanial Center and the Kingwood College all provide wonderful local entertainment.

Kingwood residents are very active in their community as there are over 100 clubs and organizations --- one for every interest.

Kings Crossing Town Center in Kingwood provides great shopping and dining locally, as well as being a fun gathering place in the community. Many special events take place at the attractive KingwoodTown Center. Heritage Center is located in Kingwood's Town Center.

It is a new fantastic meeting, banquet and reception facility that encompasses 6,800-square-feet. The facility overlooks the Bens Branch Bayou.

Humble is a small town 2 miles south of Kingwood and is home to the Deerbrook Mall and the Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens.

Houston offers world class cultural opportunities including opera, ballet, symphony, theater, and museums. Other great attractions in Houston include The Houston Space Center, the Kemah Boardwalk in Houston, and The Houston Zoo.

Galveston is not far away. Be sure to visit the Strand Historic District, the futuristic Moody Gardens, and the great beaches that surround the island. The Gulf of Mexico is also a great location for boating and fishing.

Interesting Facts

King Ranch was one of the original developers of the Kingwood community. Founded in 1853, King Ranch is called the "Birthplace of American Ranching," and is one of the largest and oldest active ranches in the United States. King Ranch continues to be a tourist attraction to this day. The ranch has grown into a thriving business that includes cattle ranching, farming, citrus groves, retail shops, and commodity marketing and processing.

Kingwood was annexed to the City of Houston in 1996 and uses services provided by the City of Houston. A plan for deannexation failed in 1999. Many residents still favor the deannexation.

Kingwood is the 2nd largest master-planned community within the Houston Metropolitan Area.

Houston is the location of NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and the Mission Control Center. Because of this, "Houston" was the first word spoken on the moon.
