About The Woodlands, Texas Area

The Woodlands is a 27,000-acre master-planned community located 27 miles north of downtown Houston. It is nestled in the forested landscape of the Piney Woods region of eastern Texas. As of 2000, the population was 55,649 people. The projected population of the Woodlands is 120,000 people. This community is unique with its Town Center and Woodlands Waterway that makes getting to shops and restaurants a breeze. It has been winning awards of excellence since its inception in 1974 for its dedication to preserving the natural environment. The Woodlands' neighborhoods are designed to blend with nature and provide a beautiful and serene environment to call home. The Villages

The Woodlands has several villages within it and each village has several neighborhoods as well as a retail center and parks. Location

The Woodlands is located in Montgomery County, in the eastern portion of Texas. It is 28 miles from Houston in the Houston metro area. It is approximately 95 miles east to the Louisiana border. The Woodlands is located 72 miles from Galveston and the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, and 135 miles from Austin, Texas. Dallas is 197 miles away and San Antonio is 203 miles from The Woodlands.

Geography/Terrain

The Woodlands boasts a beautiful natural environment with hundreds of acres of parks and green open space, as well as a beautiful waterway that is over a mile long. Towering pines and a variety of deciduous trees make up the landscape. The Woodlands is located in the Piney Woods region of eastern Texas and is made up of primarily flat terrain. The Woodlands has a total area of almost 24 square miles.

Education

At The Woodlands, the education of its young people is a high priority. The Conroe Independent School District is highly rated by the Texas Education Agency and has 11 elementary schools, 3 Intermediate Schools, 2 Junior High Schools, and 3 High Schools (one for grade 9, one for grades 9 - 11, and one for grades 10 - 12). The Woodlands is also home to 4 private schools for children.

Montgomery College, one of the North Harris Montgomery Community Colleges, is located in College Park, The Woodlands' center for higher education. University Center is also located in College Park and is convenient for student residents to take college and university courses. The University Center offers bachelor's and master's degree programs from several excellent Texas Universities and colleges including Texas A&M University, University of Houston, Texas Southern University, Sam Houston University, and Prairie View A&M University. Continuing education in a wide variety of subjects is also offered at The University Center.

The Woodlands is a thriving business center as well as a residential community. It is home to over 1,200 businesses that include biotechnology firms, oil companies, and retail establishments. A high percentage of employees who work in The Woodlands, also live there.

The residents of The Woodlands are highly educated with 96% having a high school diploma, 56% having a Bachelors degree, and 19% having a graduate or professional degree. Unemployment is low at 2.7%. The average travel time to work is 32 minutes.

Medical Centers in or near The Woodlands include St. Luke's Community Medical Center, Healthsouth Rehab Hospital-Conroe, Conroe Regional Medical Center, and Tomball Regional Hospital.

At The Woodlands, you can choose the lifestyle that is perfect for you and your family. Offerings include affordable townhomes and condominiums, spacious single-family homes as well as gorgeous luxury estates, waterfront homes and upscale golf course homes. Prices range from $100,000 to over $3 million. If you are planning to buy a newly constructed home, there are over a dozen excellent builders to choose from.

Recreation With large stretches of open green space, The Woodlands is one the greenest communities in the country! It is also home to 100 beautiful parks with 100's of miles of hiking/biking trails. Playgrounds, picnic spots, swimming pools, bike tracks and skate parks are fun amenities for kids of all ages. There is a recreational center in The Woodlands, an athletic club, as well as 2 YMCA's. There is something for every kind of outdoor and sport enthusiast at The Woodlands.

The Woodlands is the only community in the U.S. to have six world-class courses including Signature courses designed by Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player. In addition, The Tournament Player Course is rated one of the top ten public courses in Texas. Lake Conroe is a beautiful 22,000 acre lake located just minutes from The Woodlands in Conroe. Lush pine forests surround the Lake. Visitors can view the incredible landscape while enjoying some of the best fishing in the region.

The Woodlands' residents can enjoy the great outdoors in the Sam Houston National Forest, one of four National Forests in Texas. The forest encompasses over 163, 000 acres of land. Lone star Hiking Trail is located in the Sam Houston National Forest. The trail is 128 miles long and runs from north of Montgomery, passing south of Huntsville and Coldspring, and ending northeast of Cleveland, Texas.

Special Attractions/Events

The Woodlands Town Center is the "downtown" of The Woodlands and includes The Woodlands Waterway and many top notch commercial and retail businesses, as well as residences. The Woodlands Mall, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion performing arts center, and Market Street attract millions of visitors each year to the Town Center. Visitors and residents just have to hop on the Water Taxi that stops at many locations in The Woodlands Town Center.

The Woodlands Waterway is over a mile long and has water taxis that provide daily service to shopping, restaurants and local special events. Water taxi stops include The Woodlands Mall, Landry's, Anadarko Petroleum, Waterway Square West, The Waterway Marriott and Convention Center, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and Town Green.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion provides world-class entertainment including contemporary music and classical performances by the Houston Ballet, the Houston Grand Opera, and the Houston Symphony.

The Forest Oasis Waterscape in the Woodlands Resort entices kids of all ages to its huge slide and waterfall, sandy beach, and much more.

The Woodlands has spectacular community events all year round. The 4th of July celebration is one of the most memorable with a performance by the Houston symphony and rousing fireworks. Santa arrives at Christmas time for the children and an ice rink is available for the community. Other fun events at The Woodlands include Dragon Boat races, art exhibits and flea markets, The Woodlands Marathon, The Woodlands Wildflower Festival, and the annual Heart Walk.
